Good Morning! My neck is out of commission after a small injury over the weekend, and it seems that my thought process has decided to take a vacation today as well. :) Thankfully, my loss is your gain.  I’ve been meaning to have a guest blogger for Music Monday for some time. Much of the music shared here was previously shared with me by a fellow music lover, and nobody has contributed to my expanding collection more than Alison Smidt. Alison is a dear and loyal friend, as well as a future business partner once I can convince her to move to Boston. ;) Til then, perhaps she can show up here a bit more.

Mae | (e)vening | Sleep Well

I’ve loved the band Mae for ages.  There’s just something about how they put harmonies together that grips me.  Somehow though, they had fallen off my musical radar.  This obviously cannot be their fault.  I’ve been distracted.

Luckily, I have just rediscovered their brilliance.  In 2009, they put out an album entitled (m)orning.  It’s pretty peppy, and definitely aimed to get you up and going.  In 2010, (a)fternoon was delivered.  It’s just lovely, perfect for that afternoon lull.  And now, in 2011, their (e)vening album.  I instantly fell in love.  And as dusk fell, so did the completion of the day.  (m)(a)(e) is here.

Sleep Well stood out automatically, mostly because I need it.  Sleep is not something that comes easily to me.  I practice, but I’ve just never been very good at it.  This song has become somewhat of an anthem for me in the past few weeks.  Breathe in.  Let the hope restore.  Fears be gone.  Breathe out.  There is something so soothing in the lyrics and melody.   Pardon the abrupt ending. The last 5 songs of the album run cohesively together… so I must recommend listening as a whole. But if you are short on time, I must insist that Good (e)vening follows.   The triumph of it leaves me smiling.   If you like what you hear, I encourage you to buy the album for the full experience.

Enjoy!  And of course… sleep well.

A Morning Off

The joy & curse of building a photography business (or any, I would assume) is that we are always working.  In the office during the week, shooting on the weekends… life is full. It is bittersweet. The continuous flow of work is something I am thankful for. I love this work. I would do it [...]

The joy & curse of building a photography business (or any, I would assume) is that we are always working.  In the office during the week, shooting on the weekends… life is full. It is bittersweet. The continuous flow of work is something I am thankful for. I love this work. I would do it for free if I were independently wealthy. I also would hire the Dr Teeth & The Electric Mayhem to play my birthday extravaganza if I were independently wealthy, but that’s neither here nor there. With any work, there are aspects of the job which eat up my time that I would rather not deal with. Though the bigger problem is simply the devouring of my time. There are weeks that fly by, causing me to look at my calendar to trace the last day I took off. While there is always work to be done, I am learning how to decipher which work can wait… even if just for a few hours.

As I set my alarm last night, I had every intention to wake this morning and dive right back into my sea of work. When I awoke this morning, bright eyed and bushy tailed, I decided to rearrange my priorities.  Picking up the most recent book to grace my nightstand, I spent an hour inspired by the profound expressions of another artist. I cuddled with James. I spent an hour doing absolutely nothing, my brain slowly de-cluttering as I laid back and stared at the ceiling. Up & out of bed, my home and my office were rid of clutter, to match my newly cleansed psyche. ;) A morning off, to just be, is a beautiful and necessary thing.

Back to work this afternoon, I have chosen to simply do what I enjoy the most about this work. Photographing beautiful things. Interacting with friends & brides, discussing the simple joys of weddings & marriage.  Touching up images that radiate with emotion. Sipping tea and writing. Remembering why I love what I do, and how important it is to let that love breathe.

Cheers,

Briana

Brendan & Laurie | Martha’s Vineyard Wedding

October 27th, 2011

A lot of photographers express that they cry at each of the weddings they shoot. I am not that photographer. I love, I laugh, I cheer, but I do not cry. I understand those who do, but I simply was not built to shed tears at weddings. The depth of the commitment I’m witnessing paired [...]

A lot of photographers express that they cry at each of the weddings they shoot. I am not that photographer. I love, I laugh, I cheer, but I do not cry. I understand those who do, but I simply was not built to shed tears at weddings. The depth of the commitment I’m witnessing paired with the pressure of documenting such a life-changing event puts me into what I call my “professional calm”. I’m great in an emergency… though thankfully have never tested that at a wedding (knock on wood)!  Imagine my surprise when I find myself in the middle of the dance floor at Brendan & Laurie’s reception, and, shortly after someone performs the worm, my eyes mist over. One glance around the room and I realized I could not evade that moment. I should have known this wedding would be an exception from the moment I learned more about their personal story. Perhaps it should have hit while watching Laurie lovingly interact with her overjoyed children & doting friends, repeatedly bursting into song as the finishing touches were applied to her hair.  Countless toasts to Brendan’s compassion surely should have tipped me off.  The sheer volume of adored guests who traveled from all across the country to Martha’s Vineyard was a testament to how committed of a community these two share. This day was an unending celebration of LOVE, between friends, family, and the Bride & Groom. Dry eyes?  Nobody had a chance.

Laurie’s details were both gorgeous and meaningful.  Her killer Romona Keveza gown was accented by an antique family bracelet. Her hairstyle featured a tiara, just like her mother did on her own wedding day.

Brendan’s family has spent many years on the Vineyard, so it was fitting that the entire wedding took place on the coast of Vineyard Haven at the West Chop Club.  This club has all of the class without any of the pretension. :) Just as all of the ladies accented their stylish pewter dresses with splashes of orange jewelry,  Morrice Florist offset the traditional setting with gorgeous pops of color.

Laurie’s family is so full of musical talent that James & I began to refer to them as the Von Trapp’s. ;) Her father and sister each sang during the ceremony.

The moment Brendan & Laurie shared their first kiss, the wedding band marched through the ceremony playing Mardi Gras music. A surprise to the weddings guests, it was such a joy to watch their faces transition from UH (to) MAZING.   Can I copyright that? Uh-Mazing  ©brianamoore2011.  ;)

A few rainclouds threatened our portrait hour, but the (massive) wedding party were pros.  We swept through the portraits and sent everyone off to the delicious Cajun inspired cocktail hour before a drop was able to fall.

Major compliments need to go out to Tea Lane Caterers.  In addition to exceptional food, the service was impeccable.  Every member of their staff was an absolute joy to work with… guest or vendor, everyone was treated with respect, enthusiasm, and a personal touch.  They definitely sky-rocketed to the top of my preferred Vendor list!

Isn’t the West Chop Casino to die for?

I’m such a sucker for the shoulder kiss. ;) Huge thanks to Eugene DiFrancesco of EugeneWorks for the ample videolight, as well as the continuous laughter!

Remember that little tidbit about Laurie coming from a musical family?  The fun & surprises didn’t stop at the ceremony. In addition to lovely a song written and performed by Laurie’s siblings,  the bride needed to shine as well. And shine she did… so brightly, it nearly melted our faces off. ;)   Sitting Brendan in a chair, Laurie & Co (aka her 2 vivacious daughters & the fantastic wedding band) performed a fierce version of Duffy’s “Mercy”, complete with choreography.  She followed this with a gorgeous rendition of the classic love song, At Last.

In addition to the tears, this reception changed something else in me… my belief that people should hire a Dj over a band.  Mike Benjamin Band rocked the house.  There was not a pair of feet left at this reception that stayed off the dance floor… and a few of those feet danced right onto the stage to perform with them. The energy and the flow of the music was perfectly paced. When the band took their break, people finally stopped to eat their cake. When dancing beats out dessert, you know you have a good thing going!

B & LO, as I look at this picture above of your “signature” dance move, I can’t help but be overwhelmed with joy. I am so honored to have shared in this day with you.  The two of you are a definition of heart & loyalty, of warmth and kindness. As partners, parents, and professionals, I wish you the very best in everything that you do… though you don’t really need it. :) You are truly blessed.

Cheers,

Briana

I don’t think I can say it any better than Nina…

Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Breeze driftin’ on by you know how I feel

It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good

Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom on the tree you know how I feel

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don’t you know
Butterflies all havin’ fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
That’s what I mean

And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel

It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good

The hectic part of my wedding season has nearly come to a close! I have been so blessed over the last 6 months, and am looking forward to the Winter and all of the organizational opportunities that come from being stuck indoors. :) Normally the changing of the leaves leads me to more thoughtful and peaceful music, but as I push through these last few busy weeks, I’ve also needed a good dose of energy and pop! Katie Herzig just released a record that fits my needs like a glove. Katie layers a variety of sounds & styles, creating a playful blend of organic and synthetic.  I find a lot of pop to be lacking in lyrical depth, but am impressed by her thoughtful writing. Both exuberant and ethereal, this album is a real gem. Check it out!

I already featured fun. earlier this year, but after I heard they dropped a new single, I had no choice but to pass on the love. Autumn anthem? I think so.

I’m out and about today, and really can’t give the band justice with my writing. I’d love to post a review from mutual friend & all around AMAZING individual,  Noel Nocciolo, but until I can get my hands on one, you can read about the band on the KCRW Music Blog.

Music Monday | Coldplay

Coldplay | Mylo Xyloto |Paradise Paradise   People seem to love or hate Coldplay. I believe anyone who doesn’t fall into the “love” category has simply never seen them live. It’s the only logical explanation.   Sidenote: I started following Gwyneth Paltrow on Twitter the day someone retweeted this: That’s gold.   Cheers, Briana
