I’m so excited to share my final Second Nature post from the 2011 season! On a blazingly hot day in October (that’s right, October), I had the opportunity to meet and shoot with Kat Hanafin.  Second shooting for Kat was a whole new experience, and one that I have taken a lot away from… including a friend. :)

What I admire the most about Kat is that what you see is what you get. In addition to being talented and knowledgeable, Kat is authentic. Be it with clients or peers, she is true to herself and her vision. Kat is not vague about who she is or what she provides, which I find refreshing in an industry so focused on sales. Her style, like mine, may not be for everyone… not everyone is a good match.  That genuine approach is what can give both brides and photographers confidence in their choice to work together, which is what leads to a greater experience.  Who doesn’t want that?

Below is my favorite image of Kat doin’ her thing… ;)

The wedding itself was a unique day for me! In addition to the high 80* temps in the fall (not even 2 weeks before the freak snowstorm), I got my own taste of what it feel like to be the paparazzi. Having a second boat to stalk follow the bridal party boat is something I doubt I will ever do again, and was the highlight of my day. :) For a full recap of the day, see Kat’s extensive post here.

Without further ado, here is a peek at my time with Kat:

Kat, I’m so thankful to have you as both a peer and a friend! Wishing you the best in business and in life. :)

I have worked with (and raved about) Shang Chen before.  This experience was definitely keeping with the last.  Shang is fun, focused, and kind. Her open communication and generous advice is a rare and appreciated trait!  Also, it’s nice to work with someone who appreciates the fine art of a perfectly cooked parmesean french fry. ;)

Here is a quick peek of our day. For Shang’s full coverage, see her blog post here.

Second Nature | Kathleen Connerton | Pearls of Newport

One of the perks of slower winters filled with office time is that I’m free to share the remaining Second Nature posts from the 2011 season.  Today features a wedding that battled it out with mother nature… remember that freak snow storm in October? One of the perks of slower winters filled with office time is that I’m free to share the remaining Second Nature posts from the 2011 season.  Today features a wedding that battled it out with mother nature… remember that freak snow storm in October? It rained & poured, plans were altered, worries arose, but at the end of the day there was a very happy couple.

Lead photographer for the day was Kathleen Connerton of Connerton Photography. Kathleen is sweet, thoughtful, and has a subtle manner in which she can calm and engage her bride.  Sadly, the only image of her I could squeeze in was when we synced cameras… but this is a pretty accurate depiction of our day together. :)

Here are a few snippets from the day…

Kathleen, thanks for bearing the storm with a smile, and for making those long blustery drives so fun!

Bonny & David | Married

My final wedding of 2011 was particularly near & dear to my love-loving heart. :) Dear, darling Bonny, one of the most loyal and generous people I have ever known,  found her match in the rumination & subtlety that defines David. Their Quaker wedding was a unique event that centered around community, full of warmth and personal touches.

Guests spent the weekend at Camp Stevens, the Southern California retreat center where Bonny and David have celebrated Easter with their Quaker community for the last 5 years. At this event in 2010, they were engaged. There was no better place to honor their commitment!

The weekend was full of activities for the guests. Everyone ate, cleaned, hiked, danced, shared, and laughed together. The highlight of the activities was archery on the morning of the wedding. How many people can say this was how they warmed up for their ceremony? I’m refraining from the many bulls-eye/relationship puns running rampant in my head right now. ;)

The wedding itself was a community effort, a labor of love. All of the decorations were handmade by friends and family. The lodge was decorated by guests the evening prior to the ceremony, a collaborative creative effort fueled by anticipation and a rocking soundtrack. Speaking of music, I loved the personal touches inspired by lyrics from The Decemberists and Damien Rice.

What would a Julian wedding be without pie? Lots and lots of pie. Mmmmm. I firmly believe that pie is the new cupcake! All that baked goodness was complimented by a playful and delicious cake from Black Market Bakery.

Hair, make up, and florals were generously provided by close friends. The talent in this tight circle was immense!

Those faces = JOY. Meet Bonny & David:

Love that radiant smile!

The O’Neill women. :)

No photos were taken during the ceremony. The guests sat in a circle, and everyone was free to share their thoughts and wishes with the bride & groom. Afterwards, the wedding certificate was signed by every person in attendance.  From there, we enjoyed delicious food, and hours of dancing.

Bonny & David, this was such a beautiful start to your life together! I can’t wait to see how your marriage and future develops. :) I love you dearly!

Cheers,

As I shared on Facebook earlier this week, I was so excited to have the beautiful wedding of Lindsey & Rebecca featured on Borrowed & Bleu, and I’m equally happy to be sharing more photos from their big day right now!

Becca & Lindsey are the anti-bridezilla. These two lovely ladies are the definition of low maintenance! They had only 2 “must-haves”. The location (Wellesley College, where they met), and the food. Really great food. Oh the food….(nom). From there, the details slowly came together, and each were just as personal. Between the meaningful touches and the carefree attitudes, this was a wedding to remember & exemplify. Here is a “taste” of the big day. ;)

Meet Lindsey & Rebecca:

The wind and rain picked up as everyone was getting ready, but thankfully it cleared just in time for the fun to begin!

All the festivities took place at the charming TZE House. The lawn & nearby lake provided a perfect setting for cocktail hour.

I spent the beginning portion of cocktail hour with the families of the brides. Huge thanks to my assistant for the day, Melissa Sanford, for capturing the foodie-love images below, and many other happy moments during this time! :)

I always have a moment of envy during the signing of the Ketubah.  How vibrant is this design? LOVE.

The reception was a delight for the eyes and the stomach thanks to Derby Farms,  Season to Taste Catering and Party Favors.

Ari from Beat Train Productions provided music & lighting for our gorgeous brides and their closest friend & family to dance their hearts out to. Which they did. Exuberantly.  I’ve heard stories of this group enjoying epic nights out dancing, and they didn’t fail to bring it to the reception floor! Although I bet they don’t dance the horah on most Saturday nights. ;)

Lower left image is a prime example of how photographing on the dance floor, near people you know, can lead to a few surprises!

Becca & Lindsey, your wedding was an absolute treat! Thank you for choosing me to be a part of such a FUN and meaningful celebration of your love. It was truly an honor!

Cheers,

Brendan & Laurie | Martha’s Vineyard Wedding

October 27th, 2011

A lot of photographers express that they cry at each of the weddings they shoot. I am not that photographer. I love, I laugh, I cheer, but I do not cry. I understand those who do, but I simply was not built to shed tears at weddings. The depth of the commitment I’m witnessing paired [...]

A lot of photographers express that they cry at each of the weddings they shoot. I am not that photographer. I love, I laugh, I cheer, but I do not cry. I understand those who do, but I simply was not built to shed tears at weddings. The depth of the commitment I’m witnessing paired with the pressure of documenting such a life-changing event puts me into what I call my “professional calm”. I’m great in an emergency… though thankfully have never tested that at a wedding (knock on wood)!  Imagine my surprise when I find myself in the middle of the dance floor at Brendan & Laurie’s reception, and, shortly after someone performs the worm, my eyes mist over. One glance around the room and I realized I could not evade that moment. I should have known this wedding would be an exception from the moment I learned more about their personal story. Perhaps it should have hit while watching Laurie lovingly interact with her overjoyed children & doting friends, repeatedly bursting into song as the finishing touches were applied to her hair.  Countless toasts to Brendan’s compassion surely should have tipped me off.  The sheer volume of adored guests who traveled from all across the country to Martha’s Vineyard was a testament to how committed of a community these two share. This day was an unending celebration of LOVE, between friends, family, and the Bride & Groom. Dry eyes?  Nobody had a chance.

Laurie’s details were both gorgeous and meaningful.  Her killer Romona Keveza gown was accented by an antique family bracelet. Her hairstyle featured a tiara, just like her mother did on her own wedding day.

Brendan’s family has spent many years on the Vineyard, so it was fitting that the entire wedding took place on the coast of Vineyard Haven at the West Chop Club.  This club has all of the class without any of the pretension. :) Just as all of the ladies accented their stylish pewter dresses with splashes of orange jewelry,  Morrice Florist offset the traditional setting with gorgeous pops of color.

Laurie’s family is so full of musical talent that James & I began to refer to them as the Von Trapp’s. ;) Her father and sister each sang during the ceremony.

The moment Brendan & Laurie shared their first kiss, the wedding band marched through the ceremony playing Mardi Gras music. A surprise to the weddings guests, it was such a joy to watch their faces transition from UH (to) MAZING.   Can I copyright that? Uh-Mazing  ©brianamoore2011.  ;)

A few rainclouds threatened our portrait hour, but the (massive) wedding party were pros.  We swept through the portraits and sent everyone off to the delicious Cajun inspired cocktail hour before a drop was able to fall.

Major compliments need to go out to Tea Lane Caterers.  In addition to exceptional food, the service was impeccable.  Every member of their staff was an absolute joy to work with… guest or vendor, everyone was treated with respect, enthusiasm, and a personal touch.  They definitely sky-rocketed to the top of my preferred Vendor list!

Isn’t the West Chop Casino to die for?

I’m such a sucker for the shoulder kiss. ;) Huge thanks to Eugene DiFrancesco of EugeneWorks for the ample videolight, as well as the continuous laughter!

Remember that little tidbit about Laurie coming from a musical family?  The fun & surprises didn’t stop at the ceremony. In addition to lovely a song written and performed by Laurie’s siblings,  the bride needed to shine as well. And shine she did… so brightly, it nearly melted our faces off. ;)   Sitting Brendan in a chair, Laurie & Co (aka her 2 vivacious daughters & the fantastic wedding band) performed a fierce version of Duffy’s “Mercy”, complete with choreography.  She followed this with a gorgeous rendition of the classic love song, At Last.

In addition to the tears, this reception changed something else in me… my belief that people should hire a Dj over a band.  Mike Benjamin Band rocked the house.  There was not a pair of feet left at this reception that stayed off the dance floor… and a few of those feet danced right onto the stage to perform with them. The energy and the flow of the music was perfectly paced. When the band took their break, people finally stopped to eat their cake. When dancing beats out dessert, you know you have a good thing going!

B & LO, as I look at this picture above of your “signature” dance move, I can’t help but be overwhelmed with joy. I am so honored to have shared in this day with you.  The two of you are a definition of heart & loyalty, of warmth and kindness. As partners, parents, and professionals, I wish you the very best in everything that you do… though you don’t really need it. :) You are truly blessed.

Cheers,

Briana

Bobbi-Lynn & Rob, I can’t thank you so much for such a memorable first New England wedding. I’m amazed at how much business has grown over this last year, and I often think back on this day & smile. A year ago today, both of our lives changed for the better. This was the day I chose to move from freelance. This was the day I realized just how much I love what I do, and took the steps to make a long dream become a reality. I’m so thankful you trusted me to document this important day in your life. Your spirit is overhwelming!  I hope you are celebrating almost as wildly as you did one year ago. ;)

Cheers,

Briana
