“Right now we are here, and nothing can match our perfection, or steal the joy of this perfect moment.” – Audrey Niffenegger, (The Time Traveler’s Wife)

A versatile city like Boston provides any number of gorgeous backdrops for a young couple in love. However, there is something so special, so intimate about photographing a couple in their own neighborhood. A peek inside the home of the engaged. The documenting of the day to day life experienced in a young, maturing love. These are the moments, right here,  that can be looked upon 50 years down the line and instantly transplant them back. These are the honest portrayals of  joyous love and it’s simple glory. These are the days, in all their unmatched perfection, that build the foundation for everything yet to come.

Meet Matt & Meadow:

On a beautiful autumn day, I met Matt & Meadow outside of their Brownstone in the South End. Joining us to enjoy the brisk, fresh air was Molly, their fur child. Molly happily led the group along one of her routine walks, and was even kind enough to give a tour of the apartment, in exchange for treats and ear scratching. Leaving her at home for quality time with her Kong, Matt & Meadow enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood, stopping for drinks at the bistro where they celebrated their engagement. The South End was full of color and delight, but what really stood out the most was the comfort and joy that washed over their faces each time Matt & Meadow embraced. I felt that in those moments… I could see THEM… and my heart melted.

Matt & Meadow, I’m so happy that our paths intersected. Thank you for allowing me this peek into your lives. With your wedding merely weeks away, my anticipation grows daily. I can think of nowhere I would rather be this New Years Eve, and I can think of no better reason to be celebrating!

Brendon + Elana, Married | Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel Wedding

October 6th, 2012

“May you always have walls for the winds, a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you and all your heart might desire.”   Trade “tea by the fire” for “cocktails by the band”, and the blessing above sums up the lively wedding of Brendon [...]

May you always have walls for the winds, a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you and all your heart might desire.

Trade “tea by the fire” for “cocktails by the band”, and the blessing above sums up the lively wedding of Brendon & Elana. This couple is very special to me and my business. When I think about our initial meeting, emails, and booking, I think of those weeks as a turning point. There was a joy and a confidence that came from booking a couple like these two that drove me to build a business based on the desire to do great work with great people. This day confirmed all of those feelings. :)

Stepping into Elana’s suite at the Renaissance Hotel near the Boston Seaport, the bride was in the midst of a perfect wedding morning… relaxed, rested, and right on time. Downstairs in Brendon’s suite, the groomsmen were all smiles. Nobody could rain on their parade!

The rain started to fall just as the First Look began. Under a sweet little overhang, Elana was still able to sneak up to Brendon, and his thrilled face makes me grin every time. After a few moments, we whisked the two inside for a few cuddly moments and a whole lot of laughter.

The ceremony was short and tender. A few highlights were the gorgeous Ketuba, both mothers standing at the chupah, and the ring-bearer who just couldn’t handle the celebratory cheers. My favorite moment was watching Brendon & Elana gently entwine their fingers after exchanging rings, & they wouldn’t let go.

Just after the ceremony, the rain let up just long enough to head outside and snag a few more gorgeous, happy portraits.  While the guests mingled over drinks, Mr. & Mrs. Duca (wooooo!) enjoyed a few private moments simply enjoying being married… mmmhmmm… married! :)

The reception was flawlessly coordinated by the team at Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. The energy of the room was off the charts thanks to fabulous music from Redline, and the vivacious guests. Toasts, tears, and twirls were all charged with a celebratory enthusiasm.

To describe the final hours of the evening, I’ll let Elana & Brendon share in their own words:

The entire day/night was amazing and everything I wanted!! Brendon and I had the same favorite moment of the night.  While everyone was dancing we both just stopped and watched for a few minutes.  It was so wonderful to be with each other with all of our family and friends surrounding us having a great time!!

Brendon & Elana, I had such a blast at your wedding! Rain or shine, your love is bright and joyful. Congrats!

Cheers,

Briana

This two part engagement post is filled with huge smiles, lots of style, and a whole lotta love! This gorgeous couple currently lives in Chicago, but have deep ties to Kennebunkport. Tara spent much of her child hood in this charming town on the rocky coast of Maine. She met David while attending Boston University, and had him equally hooked after one visit. 7 years later, they could think of nowhere better document this new stage of their relationship.

Meet David & Tara:

When Tara reached out to me about the possibility of photographing her engagement party, I had no idea what I was in for… which was a whole heap of awesome. ;) The more I learned, the more excited I became.  David and Tara both have this magnetic energy that draws everyone in. David is endearing & so at ease with himself, and Tara is a pure bundle of joy. Together, they are a truly balanced and beautiful pair.

The next stop on our adventure around town is the very bench that David proposed… but I’ll let him tell you that story!

Tara and I got engaged on the coast of Kennebunkport, Maine on Christmas Eve 2011.
My plan for the proposal was to take Tara on a horse-drawn carriage ride through town and along the coast where I would “pop the question”. In order to make sure Tara had no idea the proposal was coming, I worked with her mom to convince Tara this was an early Christmas gift from her parents (which she totally bought, since we’d both been wanting to do this for years.)   Although there was no snow, it was a gorgeous winter day, freezing cold (in the single digits, the coldest day in Maine that year!) but with a beautifully shining sun. Under a heavy bearskin blanket and with hot coffees to keep us warm, we finally took the idyllic carriage ride we had been looking forward to for so long. We were both full of smiles, but inside I was still a mess, hoping I would have the right words to say to Tara when the time came…
A few days prior, I had coordinated with our carriage driver to suggest we stop at a lookout point along the coast so we could walk over to the rocky shore and I could propose right on ocean with just the two of us there (something we’d both always said we wanted). However, there was miscommunication and instead of stopping at the desired spot the driver actually began to turn back towards Tara’s home!   Not wanting to make a scene, but also knowing that in two blocks, we would be leaving the coastline, my mind was racing when I saw a group of benches with an elderly couple sitting there. I thought to myself “God, what am I going to do?” and at that exact moment, the elderly couple stood up to leave!   Seizing the opportunity, I quickly asked the driver if we could stop to “look around.” While most people might think this would lead Tara to suspect something was up, Tara (knowing me as well as she does) knew this is hardly far from the ordinary as I’m a very “stop and smell the roses” kind of guy. Poetically, as we were walking on the path toward the benches about to begin the first step in our marriage together, the elderly couple was walking out, presumably after a long and happy life together, smiling at us, as if with their blessing.
Finally, after all the planning and stressing, the moment that we’d both been waiting so long for was here. After sitting on the bench for a few minutes, me looking out to sea and stumbling over trying to find the right words and Tara holding my hand and beaming, I finally did what I’d been practicing for behind Tara’s house all week: with the glistening ocean behind me, I dropped to one knee, pulled out the ring I had designed for Tara, and said, “I’ve known for a long time it was you. Tara, will you marry me?”   With a look of extreme surprise and tears already streaming down her face, Tara didn’t answer my question but responded with another one “Is this for real???”   We’d been dating for so long – 7 years that coming January – that it was hard for both of us to believe the moment was really for real. I don’t think Tara ever answered my question (at least not in that instant) since we were busy hugging, kissing, giggling, smiling, and, yes, crying. But she didn’t have to say anything; as her boyfriend now turned fiancé, I knew exactly what she was thinking.

After a quick change, we headed down to the rocks for a bit of fun. I also asked for David to bring on the GQ, and he didn’t let me down!

Our session ended down along the water. We had originally hoped for blue skies, but I think the weather knew better than I what was needed at this moment. There is something so gorgeous about the juxtaposition of the moody clouds with their bright colors & gleeful faces. Looking at these images, one can get the sense that they will hold onto each other tightly, laughing in the face of any storms that may come their way.

And this is just half of it… stay tuned for coverage of their GORGEOUS nautical themed engagement party!

Cheers,

This short and sweet post is a reflection of my brief working relationship with Joe & Maurin. When I found out they were working with Rachael of LolaGrace Events,  I knew this couple would be dancing to the beat of their own drum. The day was what they wanted… nothing more, nothing less. Their ceremony was small and very private, and then the larger crowds (and vendors) gathered for the party. As someone who normally invests an ample amount of time into relationships with my clients,  I would have loved to spend more time with Joe & Maurin… but in a way, this was perfect. In a season of wedding madness that flies by at lightening speed, this was the wedding equivalent of a lazy summer day; relaxed, sparkly, sweet, and full of warmth.

Joe & Maurin, you two are a delight. May you navigate your marriage just as you did your wedding: your way. :)

Cheers,

Briana

I’m not a Swift hater, but I never saw myself featuring her on Music Mondays. However, this dark folksy ballad is no ordinary Swift song.  The Civil Wars (whom I loooooove) have infused this track with all of their charming, moody goodness. A gargantuan fan of the Hunger Games Trilogy, I did a mini wave at my desk in celebration of the amazing artists that will be featured on this soundtrack. Gary Ross, I’m trusting you more and more every day. ;)

Well Read | A Year in Review

For 2011, I joined my friend (and talented writer) Valerie Geary  as she challenged her readers & fellow bloggers to set a reading goal.  I don’t exactly need a push to read, but sometimes it’s good for me to have a goal with how much I want to read in order to pick up a book over the TV remote after a long day.  ;) I also had been trying to branch out and pick up different styles & genres, and previously set a goal to get good use out of my library card 2011, so this challenge helped with that! :)

I set out to read 30 books in 2011, and was happy to finish the year at 32. Sadly, while I remained committed to my reading goals, I was remiss when it came to sharing my favorites on the blog, and only got around to posting reviews on a few of the novels shown above. For 2012, my focus will be less about quantity, and more about the full experience, so expect to see more consistent posts in my Well Read series.

I am thrilled to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed every book I read this year, though a few stand out:

Lovely Bones: It was unusual, creepy, heart-warming, painful, uplifting, hauntingly beautiful. Right up my alley.

Jane Eyre & Wuthering Heights: The more Bronte, the better. Those sister make my literature loving heart soar.

Little Princes:  Conor Grennan shares his surprising adventures & personal transformation that began with a 3 month stretch as a reluctant volunteer at an orphanage in Nepal. Proceeds from every book go to Next Generation Nepal (an organization you can’t help but desire to support after reading this book). This is still at the top of my recommendations list, almost a year later.

One Day: Not ususally one for romantic stories, this book surprised me. I gave in after a rave review from Nick Hornby, and fell in the love with the story. I literally laughed, cried, groaned with a frustration that can only come from understanding.

Everything is Illuminated/Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close: Foer has a style that takes getting used to, but his work it deep, thoughtful, and full of dark humor. I preferred ELIC, likely due to my attachment to NYC, but would recommend both

Alice, I have Been: I have always been fascinated with Alice in Wonderland, so I found this piece of historical fiction to be riveting.  I was extremely grateful that the author took the time to separate fact from fiction in an afterword for the readers who found the ambiguity “curiouser & curiouser”.

Jose Villa- Fine Art Wedding Photography: my heart skips a beat with every page. Here is talent & vision to aspire to!!

It Gets Better: this book simultaneously broke my heart and gave me hope. The bullying that takes place in this country is atrocious. As a Christian, my outlook on gay rights surprises many, but I believe we are ALL children of God, made in his image, and that everyone is a thing of value, of beauty,  & deserves respect/love/acceptance. No matter your beliefs, there is no excuse for so many youth to feel so unloved.  I desperately hope that this book gives the hope and encouragement needed to those youth who can’t yet see that there is a community for them!

Hunger Games Trilogy: this was a reread. The trailer for the upcoming first film reignited the flame, and I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this story with the cast in mind. Read these nooooooow. :)

I look forward to another year of great literature. I can honestly say these pages inspire my photography just as much as any other form of art… and I like to think they keep my mind sharp. ;) I know there are many other literature lovers out there. Please chime in with recommendations for 2012! I’m kicking off the year with Great Gatsby… who knows where I will go from there!

Cheers,

Briana

As I shared on Facebook earlier this week, I was so excited to have the beautiful wedding of Lindsey & Rebecca featured on Borrowed & Bleu, and I’m equally happy to be sharing more photos from their big day right now!

Becca & Lindsey are the anti-bridezilla. These two lovely ladies are the definition of low maintenance! They had only 2 “must-haves”. The location (Wellesley College, where they met), and the food. Really great food. Oh the food….(nom). From there, the details slowly came together, and each were just as personal. Between the meaningful touches and the carefree attitudes, this was a wedding to remember & exemplify. Here is a “taste” of the big day. ;)

Meet Lindsey & Rebecca:

The wind and rain picked up as everyone was getting ready, but thankfully it cleared just in time for the fun to begin!

All the festivities took place at the charming TZE House. The lawn & nearby lake provided a perfect setting for cocktail hour.

I spent the beginning portion of cocktail hour with the families of the brides. Huge thanks to my assistant for the day, Melissa Sanford, for capturing the foodie-love images below, and many other happy moments during this time! :)

I always have a moment of envy during the signing of the Ketubah.  How vibrant is this design? LOVE.

The reception was a delight for the eyes and the stomach thanks to Derby Farms,  Season to Taste Catering and Party Favors.

Ari from Beat Train Productions provided music & lighting for our gorgeous brides and their closest friend & family to dance their hearts out to. Which they did. Exuberantly.  I’ve heard stories of this group enjoying epic nights out dancing, and they didn’t fail to bring it to the reception floor! Although I bet they don’t dance the horah on most Saturday nights. ;)

Lower left image is a prime example of how photographing on the dance floor, near people you know, can lead to a few surprises!

Becca & Lindsey, your wedding was an absolute treat! Thank you for choosing me to be a part of such a FUN and meaningful celebration of your love. It was truly an honor!

Cheers,
