Techie Tuesday | CardStar

I will admit it, I have a love/hate relationship with technology. I will admit it, I have a love/hate relationship with technology. When used wisely, we can stay organized, connect with friends & loved ones, stay on top of current events, and keep life running smoothly. When used poorly, our lives can become fragmented, and we end up spending more time slingshotting birds than interacting with out world. My goal for Techie Tuesday is to take the knowledge I gain as an avid internet/planning/research junkie, and share with my community the best ways I have found to harness it. These posts may not come weekly, but they’ll definitely pop up when I discover something that is worth passing around!

Knowing my weakness for distraction, my iPhone apps are limited to helpful tools (maps, yelp, news, Shazam, etc), business usage (fb, twitter, gmail) and the only selective fun I allow are photo (instagram, camera+) , WordsWithFriends, and Sudoku.  I’m always on the lookout for an app that will make life simpler, and running mad from those which will drain my battery and my time. Today, I found a new app that will fit within the former: CardStar!

I am a discount fanatic and the stack of loyalty/membership cards in my wallet is becoming obscene. I sometimes like to pretend the wallet bulge is just a wad of Benjamins, but let’s face it, I don’t roll like that. CardStar, thank you for both slimming my wallet and curbing my delusions of grandeur. ;)

50 Glimpses of Spontaneity

May 29th, 2011

Friday was a day filled with spontaneity. Blame it on the beautiful sunshine. I would say it should be mandatory to have a spontaneous adventure during the first warm week of the season,  but that would defeat the purpose, wouldn’t it? Friday was a day filled with spontaneity. Blame it on the beautiful sunshine. I would say it should be mandatory to have a spontaneous adventure during the first warm week of the season,  but that would defeat the purpose, wouldn’t it?

My morning began with a dear friend inviting me to join her for 50 Pic Friday. Challenge Accepted. What started as merely an opportunity to capture my day ended up setting the tone for a day worth remembering. A trip to the park with sweet little Allie. Dinner and a charming movie with James. Inspired and enchanted by the film, we chose to wander back through the city, stopping for drinks on an outdoor restaurant patio. The combination of Vitamin D, Woody Allen, and wonderful conversation put a bounce in my step and enabled me to slip into bed (late) that night with a smile on my face and not a care in the world. I don’t remember the last time I slept that well.

Here’s to a magical summer!

I have had the pleasure of shooting with the DeMarco’s multiple times now, and it always brings me joy. Molly & TJ were High School sweethearts. They met at 13, started dating at 16, and the rest is history.  When Molly and I met for coffee before our first session, she shared with me that their wedding photos were devastatingly disappointing (heart hurts just typing that), and her realization that nearly 10 years of marriage without any frame worthy photos would just not do. Last year, I captured them on campus at Brandeis University, where Molly is working hard as a PhD candidate. A few months ago, I was honored to photograph TJ as he became an ordained minister.  Both sessions were enjoyable, but this was by far my favorite, because I got to watch Molly and TJ simply be. Molly describes the start of their relationship as organic, and that is true of their love today. They share a sweet, sassy, and honest intimacy that can only come from that many years of sharing life together.  I love the freshness and excitement of engagements and weddings, but there is something so lovely and grounding about a couple at this time in their marriage. Still young, with so much life and growth ahead, but their love is already so deeply rooted…. it’s quite beautiful.

I apologize for not posting my weekly pretty ditty yesterday. I am currently in my childhood hometown visiting my ADORABLE nephew (many photos to come, naturally), and the internet went down after a freak hail storm.  After that piece of info, you would think the following statement would be dripped with sarcasm, but I mean it from the bottom of my heart: I miss this crazy little mountain town!  Hopefully I can get back again soon. My heart is forever torn between city and mountains. Settling down in the future will be such a difficult decision. Sigh.

Enjoy the song, I’m off to get a few more giggles out of the cute patoot before I leave town.

Cheers, Briana

I played this song for James the other day and shared 2 important pieces of information with him.

1. This is the song that I want played at my memorial. I have already insisted that I get to go first. He likely regrets ever watching UP with me.

2. I often feel I missed my calling to sing in a folk trio. No joke. Anybody driving by me when I play this CD with the windows down could easily back me up.

We’re all a bit mad here

It could be this beautiful spring weather that is causing everything to glow that much warmer, but, today I feel especially blessed for my mutual weirdness. :)

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
with grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

This song has a special place in my heart. It helped me through a very difficult season.  I love Mumford & Sons so much, for what their music has meant to me, and so many other reasons. There really is too much to say. So a few quick points:

-Their lyrics have substance & truth... and quote Shakespeare
-Their music is both lovely & evocative
-They use the word "heart" more than anybody should, and yet it only makes me smile.
-2 words: Railroad Revival
-1 word: Timshel
-Musicians from London= my kryptonite
-Banjos are hot
-Marcus has a book club

Tonight, they will be the featured band for the Invisible Children:25 event in Austin TX.
I can only imagine how many people who would not have participated in this event will
now be involved thanks to M&S agreeing to play. I'm excited to see how many people will
learn about this wonderful organization, and hopefully spread the word. I encourage everyone
reading to check out the event page. It's too late for many to spend the full 25 hours in
silence, but everyone has a chance to at least take out 25 minutes, and donate $25, to this
special event. To find out if you can Break The Silence in your own city, check out the website.

Let every man and woman count himself immortal.  Let him catch the revelation of Jesus in his resurrection.  Let him say not merely, “Christ is risen,” but “I shall rise.”  ~Phillips Brooks

I’m enjoying a work-free weekend at home with my darling James, but I had to briefly sign on to share with you this piece of inspiring work by the insanely talented Jeremy Cowart.  I have long been a fan of Jeremy, and am continually intrigued and empowered by watching his artistic process. Jeremy, thanks for sharing your fabulous creativity, and providing me (and many others) with the perfect piece to represent my greatest passions of art, of music, of faith and humanity. You made my heart soar.

I’m off to cuddle with my husband and dream of the delicious ham I’ll be cooking for our Easter Feast tomorrow.  While I fondly look back on the Easter Sundays of my childhood; complete with church pageants, chocolate eggs, epic neighborhood egg hunts, and matching sibling outfits (oh the photos I could share), I’m particularly fond of the newer traditions I have started. This holiday has taken on a whole new meaning as I adjust to life in New England. After a particularly blizzardy winter, paired with a season of personal & physical brokenness, I merely have to take a walk outside to be reminded of what this weekend means to me. I have been raised in church, but I think no matter your beliefs, there is something so beautiful and transcendent about Christ’s story, and the power of hope.  As I walk around on my healthy & tumor-free ankle; as I see in the newly blooming trees, I witness first hand that after a time of deathly cold, the warmth of life can return… I am able to see that new life, and it all begins with hope. Mine comes from my faith, and I hope that is something each of you can find in your life, whatever form that may take. I look forward to celebrating that hope & faith tomorrow, without the fanfare. Just  the simplicity of good friends, good food, & celebrating good news… it’s truly a blessing indeed.

Cheers, Briana
